When is scoliosis surgery considered?

Surgery is usually an option when:

  • The curvature of the spine is significantly worse.
  • Nonsurgical treatments such as braces or physical therapy have failed.
  • Severe pain or interference with breathing or movement due to the curvature.
  • The curvature of the spine is greater than 45-50 degrees.

How is surgery performed?

  • Spinal Fusion: This is the most common surgical procedure. The affected vertebrae are fused together using metal rods, screws, and wires to straighten the spine.
  • Surgical instruments: These instruments are used to hold the spine in the correct position so that the bones can heal and the vertebrae can grow normally.
  • Duration of surgery: The procedure may take between 4 to 8 hours, depending on the complexity of the case.

What are the potential risks of scoliosis correction surgery?

Scoliosis surgery, like any major surgery, carries some potential risks. Potential risks of scoliosis surgery include:

Infection: An infection may occur at the site of surgery or in the spine itself. This is usually treated with antibiotics.

Bleeding: Bleeding may occur during or after surgery, and in some cases, a blood transfusion may be needed.

Nerve damage: Surgery may injure nerves, which can cause problems such as weakness, numbness, or, in rare cases, paralysis.
